The Marker Oath
The blood oath no one can refuse.
A marker is a medallion that symbolizes a blood oath in the John Wick films. Whoever holds someone's marker can call in a debt that the bound person cannot refuse, and honoring markers is one of the underworld's rules, alongside the ban on business on Continental grounds.

Santino's marker
John owes a marker to the Camorra boss Santino D'Antonio, who helped him complete the "impossible task" that let him retire and marry Helen. In John Wick: Chapter 2 Santino invokes it to make John assassinate his sister Gianna, so that Santino can claim her seat on the High Table. Faced with certain death, Gianna slits her wrists and John shoots her to end her suffering and fulfil the marker. Winston later confirms to Santino that the marker has been fulfilled, freeing John from being unable to defy or harm him.
Later markers
At the end of Chapter 2 Winston delays John's excommunicado by one hour and gives him a marker for future use. In Chapter 3 - Parabellum John retrieves a marker medallion from the New York Public Library and presents it to Sofia, manager of the Moroccan Continental, who owes him for rescuing her daughter.
