Production

In March 2023, producer Erica Lee stated that Lionsgate Films was developing an untitled film to expand the John Wick franchise, though she gave no details at that time. She expressed interest in a project detailing the backstory of Rina Sawayama's character Akira, and later revealed her personal interest in a spin-off featuring that character. That same month, Donnie Yen expressed interest in reprising his role from Chapter 4 in a potential spin-off centered on Caine, acknowledging ongoing discussions for such a reprisal as a continuation of the post-credits scene where Akira seeks revenge against Caine.

In November 2023, Chad Stahelski confirmed multiple projects were in development exploring the post-credits story. After the resolution of the writers and actors strikes, Lionsgate confirmed work on multiple films had resumed. In May 2024, a film centered on Caine was officially announced, with Yen reprising his role. Robert Askins wrote the script, exploring the continuing story chronologically following Chapter 4's final scene.

Stahelski, Basil Iwanyk, and Erica Lee served as producers, overseeing the movie through their developmental roles at Lionsgate. By October 2024, Stahelski confirmed the untitled movie was in development as one of several upcoming John Wick projects. Lionsgate greenlit the project in April 2025 at CinemaCon, with Yen directing and Mattson Tomlin writing a new draft based on a pitch from Stahelski and Yen. Yen served as an executive producer, while Stahelski oversaw production.

The plot follows the character released from his role with the High Table, taking place chronologically after Chapter 4. Described as a modern-day classic Hong Kong-style kung-fu movie, the project is a joint venture between Lionsgate, Thunder Road Films, and 87Eleven Entertainment.
