Extremely Inappropriate!

A Showa-era man clashes with modern Japan.

Last updated

Extremely Inappropriate!, often shortened to Futehodo, is a 2024 Japanese comedy musical drama. It follows a man who time travels between 1986 and 2024, finding his Shōwa-era attitudes clash with modern society. The show contrasts 1980s extremes like harassment and smoking with 2020s phenomena such as smartphones and cancel culture, satirizing both. Each episode includes an original, humorous song tied to the cultural theme.

Plot

Ichiro Ogawa is a widowed junior high teacher and baseball coach in 1986 Tokyo, known for his strict, old-school methods and sharp tongue. He lives with his daughter Junko, a rebellious sukeban.

One day, he boards a city bus that turns out to be a time machine, transporting him to Tokyo in 2024. He wanders into his old haunt, the cafe Scandal, and meets Nagisa Inushima, a single mother who works at EBS television. He finds a way back to 1986 through a hole in the cafe's restroom wall.

Meanwhile, feminist sociologist Sakae Sakisaka and her son Kiyoshi travel from 2024 to 1986. While Ichiro is away, they move into the Ogawa home. A love triangle forms between Junko, Kiyoshi, and Junko's boyfriend Mutsumi Akitsu.

Kiyoshi becomes fixated on helping a hikikomori student named Tsuyoshi Sako, eventually befriending him and convincing him to return to school. The cafe owner patches the restroom hole, but Ichiro learns from Sakae that the time-traveling bus was built by her ex-husband and runs on a fixed weekly schedule from the same stop. He returns to 2024, moves in with a young app developer named Masahiko, starts a relationship with Nagisa, and takes a job at EBS as a counselor, applying his blunt Showa-era approach to modern workplace problems.

Nagisa introduces Ichiro to her father Yuzuru, who recognizes Ichiro as his father-in-law. Ichiro discovers that Nagisa is his granddaughter, that he and Junko both died in the 1995 Hanshin earthquake when Nagisa was very young, and that the time machine's inventor is Masakazu Inoue—one of his former students and baseball players, who is also Sakae's ex-husband and Kiyoshi's father.

Ichiro returns to 1986, then brings Junko to 2024. There, Junko meets Nagisa and Yuzuru, visits Tokyo Skytree and Enoshima with Nagisa's hairdresser, and grows hopeful about the future. She returns to 1986, abandons her sukeban style, and decides to attend university.

Funding for the time machine project is cut, leaving Ichiro stuck in 2024. Masakazu later finds enough fuel for one more round trip to 1986. Nagisa is suspended from her job over harassment allegations, and she joins Ichiro on the trip back. Sakae takes over Ichiro's role at EBS, and Ichiro persuades Kiyoshi to return to 2024 with Nagisa on the time machine's final run, restoring everyone to their original timelines.

Back in 2024, Kiyoshi is spotted on the street by Tsuyoshi, who has become a wealthy video game developer and has been searching for Kiyoshi since junior high. Kiyoshi and Sakae convince Tsuyoshi to sponsor the time machine program. Nagisa and Masahiko begin a relationship after Ichiro secretly rigs their dating apps to match them.

Back in 1986, Ichiro is transformed. He no longer tolerates the harassment culture of the Showa era and tries to inspire his students and baseball players by telling them about the brighter future ahead.

Late one night, he hears knocking from the restroom at Scandal. Opening the door, he finds a large hole in the wall and a much older Masakazu, who announces he has come from the year 2054, having found a time tunnel that can go to any point in time. Ichiro climbs into the hole with him.
