Plot
Set in 2107, the series follows four pilots—Aoi Hidaka, Kurara Tachibana, Sakuya Kamon, and Johnny Bernet—chosen to operate the combining robot Dancouga Nova, which is deployed to stop small-scale wars around the globe. The secret organization Dragon's Hive gathers the pilots and dispatches them on missions from its base. The robot consists of four separate units: Nova Eagle, Nova Rhino, Nova Liger, and Nova Elephant.
Characters
Aoi Hidaka is a red-haired, undefeated Formula-Zero One racing champion who pilots Nova Eagle and serves as the chief pilot of Dancouga Nova; she also works as a model and eventually quits racing to focus on modeling. Kurara Tachibana, a blue-haired top-class Narcotics Investigator, pilots Nova Liger; she is skilled with firearms and became a top policewoman after witnessing her father beaten by thugs as a child. Sakuya Kamon, a brown-haired homeless man, pilots Nova Rhino; he is content with his lifestyle and unknowingly introduces the catchphrase 'Yatte yaruze!' to the team, later feeling inferior because Nova Rhino only forms the pivot foot. Johnny Bernet, a blonde salaryman, pilots Nova Elephant; he enjoys cooking and reads men's magazines, and is nicknamed 'Clark Kent' by Sammy. Tanaka commands the team, knowing more than he reveals but caring for their well-being, though battles often interrupt his explanations. Roo Riruri is also mentioned.
Mecha
Dancouga Nova is a combining robot formed from four machines: Nova Eagle (head), Nova Rhino (left foot), Nova Liger (right foot), and Nova Elephant (body), each with humanoid, beast, and vehicle transformations. Its weapons include an unnamed energy-loaded punch, the Dankuu Hou (Slash/Sever Space Cannon) array, Missile Detonator launchers, the Dankuu Ken (Slash/Sever Space Sword) atomic-vibration blade, and the Boost Nova Knuckle, which launches the right arm. When the Aggressive System activates, Dancouga Nova enters God Beast Mode, turning gold and becoming beast-like; Aoi unlocked this mode in episode 9, and its intense power requires the whole team to pilot it as a last resort. The D-Phoenix is a transport airship for the units, and the D-Poseidon is a submarine that transforms into a large robot, first appearing in episode 8 and capable of space flight in the final episode. The Dragon's Hive serves as the organization's base.
