The series is set in Kashihara, Nara, and centers on Akihito Kanbara, a high school student who is an immortal half-youmu—the offspring of a supernatural creature called a youmu and a human. After saving Mirai Kuriyama from jumping off a school roof, he learns she is a Spirit World Warrior who can manipulate blood. Mirai, the last survivor of her clan, initially attempts to kill Akihito as practice to overcome her fear of killing youmu, but their relationship deepens as he helps her gain confidence.

Youmu are supernatural creatures that materialize from human negative emotions such as hatred, jealousy, and malice. They can only be seen by those with supernatural affinity. Most youmu are docile and coexist with humans, but when their behavior upsets the balance, Spirit World Warriors are sent to kill them. Upon death, a youmu produces a Youmu Stone that can be traded for income. Half-youmu like Akihito are rare offspring of a youmu and a human.

Key characters include Mitsuki Nase, president of the Literary Club, and her brother Hiroomi, who can set up barriers. Akihito's youmu half, referred to as 'Beyond the Boundary,' possesses immense destructive power and can emerge when his human body is weakened, leading to rampages. The Nase clan monitors Akihito and is tasked with killing him if his youmu half goes berserk.
