Plot
In 1965, a teenage girl contacts Ai Enma, the Hell Girl, through the Hell Correspondence. Ai can send anyone the user holds a grudge against to Hell immediately, but the user forfeits their own soul to Hell upon death. The girl sends her bully to Hell and later regrets it. In 2019, that same girl, now elderly and ill, recounts her story to her journalist son Kudo Jin before dying. He publishes the story.
High schooler Ichikawa Miho attends a concert by Maki, a charismatic rising musician, where a pervert gropes her. Another girl, Nanjo Haruka, who is obsessed with Maki, rescues Miho, and they become close friends. They later attend a concert by pop star Mikuriya Sanae. During the performance, a man slashes Sanae's face with a knife. Distraught over her scars, Sanae finds Jin's article, accesses the Hell Correspondence, and types the name of her attacker, Nagaoka Takuro. She sees a vision of Hell and meets Ai, who gives her a straw doll with a red thread. If Sanae unties the thread, Takuro will be sent to Hell, but when she dies, she will also go to Hell.
Sanae meets Jin, who advises her not to pull the thread and to move on. However, after receiving a cruel letter from Takuro, she pulls the thread, and the doll dissolves. Takuro is dragged to Hell. His mother goes to the Mikuriya residence to beg forgiveness; Sanae tells her she sent her son to Hell and resumes her career with Maki as her manager. During Sanae's performance, Ai appears to take her to Hell; Takuro's mother had entered Sanae's name in the Hell Correspondence. Takuro's mother goes to Sanae's parents and explains the situation before committing suicide.
After Sanae's disappearance, Maki holds an audition to replace her. He selects Haruka as the new soloist, makes her take drugs, and then kisses her. Maki tells Miho to stay away from Haruka because she is no longer pure. Miho goes to Haruka's residence and sees Maki and Haruka together. Distraught, Miho believes Maki has brainwashed Haruka. She goes to Kudo for more information; he confirms Maki is dangerous and plays a voice recording in which Maki discusses killing Haruka during a live performance as a sacrifice to cleanse the world.
