Dōan attended Amagasaki Municipal Urakaze Elementary School and Amagasaki Municipal Odaminami Junior High School. During elementary school, he played for Urakaze FC and trained at the Vissel Kobe soccer school, later joining Nishinomiya SS. In junior high, he chose Gamba Osaka Junior Youth over offers from Gamba Osaka, Cerezo Osaka, Vissel Kobe, and Nagoya Grampus Eight. In 2012, he achieved an unprecedented national treble at the U-15 level with the junior youth team. At Gamba's youth academy, he was dubbed the 'next Akihiro Ienaga' due to his powerful physique and left-footed play. He came through the Gamba Osaka youth system and joined the senior team in 2015. He moved to FC Groningen on loan in June 2017, with the option to purchase exercised in April 2018. He joined PSV Eindhoven in 2019, then moved on loan to Arminia Bielefeld for the 2020–21 season. He signed with SC Freiburg in July 2022, and joined Eintracht Frankfurt in August 2025. Internationally, he debuted for Japan in September 2018 and scored his first goal in October 2018. He played in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, scoring equalizers against Germany and Spain. He was selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad in May 2026.
