Tanaka was born in the Miyamae-ku ward of Kawasaki on 10 September 1998. He started playing football in kindergarten. He made his Japan national team debut on 14 December 2019 in a 5–0 win against Hong Kong. He was named in the 22-man squad for the 2020 Olympic Games and started every match. He scored his first international goal on 12 October 2021 in a 2–1 home win against Australia. On 1 December 2022, he scored the winning goal in a 2–1 victory over Spain at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He was selected in the 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on 15 May 2026.
