History

Genki Sudo formed World Order in 2009 with four other male dancers after retiring from mixed martial arts. The original lineup included Sudo, Yusuke Morisawa, Hayato Uchiyama, Ryo Noguchi, and Kiyoyuki Sakiyama. Sudo had previously worked as a mixed martial arts fighter, Takushoku University Wrestling section director, and actor. Techno artists such as Takashi Watanabe and Ken Ishii contributed to the band's musical image. The group gained public recognition in Japan through television appearances and received praise abroad for its robotic dance style and office worker visual stereotype. In a 2014 interview, Sudo stated that the robotic dancing in suits was intended to add humor to the Hollywood stereotype of serious Japanese people. The debut song "World Order" was released on iTunes on December 16, 2009, and the debut album World Order followed on July 7, 2010. The music video for "Mind Shift" introduced Masato Ochiai and Akihiro Takahashi, expanding the group to seven members. The song "Machine Civilization" was produced in response to the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. The "2012" music video saw Kiyoyuki Sakiyama's departure and Takeshi Jonishi's effective replacement. During filming, three members were hospitalized and two others nearly hospitalized due to heat and limited water intake. The band set a Guinness World Record for "Largest Robot Dance" with 647 people at a Dell Streak Pro event in Tokyo on March 15, 2012. Their second album 2012 peaked at sixth place on the Oricon Weekly Album chart.
