History
The group was formed in October 2019 by four active members of the idol group Sakura Gakuin: Kano Fujihira, Soyoka Yoshida, Tsugumi Aritomo, and Momoe Mori, who adopted the stage names Kano, Soyo, Gumi, and Momo. Fujihira had also served as one of the three rotating "Avengers" support dancers for the kawaii metal band Babymetal, which originated as a Sakura Gakuin sub-unit. On October 15, 2019, @onefive created social media accounts on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube, keeping the members' identities secret. Their identities were revealed on October 19, 2019, during the Sakura Gakuin Festival 2019 at the Kanagawa Arts Theatre, where they performed their debut single "Pinky Promise" for the first time during the encore. The single was released digitally the next day, October 20, 2019, marking the group's official debut. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the group could not hold in-person events shortly after formation and relied on an online presence for virtual events. Their first CD single, "Mada Minu Sekai," was released on June 24, 2020, with its music video recorded by the members at home. The group collaborated with Adobe on a photo collage contest for that single. On June 25, 2020, the youth culture magazine Ite featured @onefive on its cover. A four-episode radio special, @onefive's Mada Minu Talk, began on JFN Park on June 29, 2020. A live-streamed performance commemorated the CD single's release on July 19, 2020. On August 30, 2020, the four members graduated from Sakura Gakuin via a live-streamed concert titled The Road to Graduation 2019 Final. Fujihira and Yoshida had recorded five albums with Sakura Gakuin, while Aritomo and Mori had recorded four; their final album, Sakura Gakuin 2019 Nendo: Story, included their graduation song "Crossroad." In September 2020, @onefive collaborated with the Japanese glass manufacturer Hario for accessories worn in the outfits for "Shizuku."
Artistry
@onefive describes itself as a "new species of idol" that values live performance skills and creative involvement beyond conventional kawaii. Members contribute ideas to song concepts, album sequencing, cover art, setlists, and outfits. Their lyrics often depict strong Japanese girls and incorporate the members' thoughts and opinions. On some occasions, members have written lyrics or choreographed songs in part or whole; for example, the song "1518" from the album 1518 was entirely written and choreographed by the members. They have also created special choreography and rewritten lyrics for live shows, which invite fan chants, circle pits, and rhythmic towel spinning. The group promotes good qualities of Japanese music while incorporating foreign elements such as hip-hop, rage, Afrobeat, jungle, Jersey club, and Middle Eastern music. "Kaguya" blends hip-hop, EDM, and traditional Japanese music. Hip-hop is especially prominent in songs like "Justice Day," "ChocoLove," "Sit Down Please," and "Kibidango." Other genres include hyperpop and chiptune. Early music has been described as predominantly electropop, with songs like "Pinky Promise," "Mada Minu Sekai," and "BBB." Members have cited Blackpink, Perfume, Red Velvet, and Mamamoo as influences. In 2026, member Momoe Mori described the song "Muteki Atashi Mōdo" as "Babymetal × Perfume = @onefive."
Reception
Satoshi Shinkai of Real Sound praised the group's singing and dancing as "incredibly high level" and "polished through rigorous training." Dai Tanaka from Barks stated that the group's cultivated singing and dancing skills are "very high." Spice's Endo noted the "professional quality" of the self-produced choreography for "Underground" and "Let Me Go." Pop 'n' Roll highlighted the "multifaceted nature" and "high quality singing and dancing" during a self-choreographed performance of "Just for You" accompanied by member Soyoka Yoshida on piano. Yusei Abe of Bhodhit Magazine observed that while their live performances are wonderful, their personalities are "truly lovely as well." Hannah Lee of Nante Japan described @onefive as "pushing the boundaries of what exactly is an 'idol' in today's sound." Patrick St. Michel identified the quartet as an "idol alternative" interested in "the cutting edges of idol pop sound." Mexico's Revulsión evaluated the group's music as "sonically optimal for the international ear."
