Production
In December 2020, after its fourteenth season, the show was picked up for four more seasons, which would bring it to season 18. At the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, Rob McElhenney, the show's creator and showrunner, and Quinta Brunson, the creator and star of Abbott Elementary, started working on a crossover between the two series. Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger later gave the green light. On August 4, 2024, Charlie Day posted on Instagram that the writers' room would begin work on the season the following week. The writing team includes Mac, Day, David Hornsby, Javi Scott, Nina Pedrad, and Keyonna Taylor. Danny DeVito said filming was expected to start in September 2024. Instagram announced on October 16 that filming had begun, and on December 4, it was announced that filming was complete.
