On April 1, 2016, the series was renewed for a thirteenth and fourteenth season, tying it with The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet as the longest-running live-action sitcom in American TV history by number of seasons. Following the twelfth season finale, Glenn Howerton expressed doubt about his return, describing it as partially a creative and personal decision, and suggested an extended hiatus. Kaitlin Olson confirmed the hiatus in late April due to the cast's busy schedules. Rob McElhenney confirmed in August 2018 that Howerton appears in pretty much every episode; Howerton appeared in six of ten episodes but had no writing credits.
