Into the Breach Codexery

Chitin

Plates over plates over plates — and behind them, something patient.

Chitin is an armored Breacher type that emerges from the dimensional rift, its carapace a layered exoskeleton of hardened, iridescent plates that make it one of the tougher mid-tier threats the Vanguards face on the grid. Where Snappers dart and Spitters lob acid from a distance, Chitin relies on brute durability and a crushing, pincer-like strike to grind down anything that gets too close to its territory.

In the broader ecosystem of the Breach, Chitin occupies a role similar to a living barricade: it does not spawn, does not fly, and does not retreat. It simply stands, plates interlocked, and waits for the Vanguards to make a costly mistake. For players, it is the reminder that not every Breacher can be knocked, thrown, or drilled away before it lands a hit.

Lore & Background

The Breach does not simply pour creatures into the world; it leaks an entire ecology. Chitin belongs to the lower strata of that ecology, the organisms that evolved in an environment where being eaten was the primary selective pressure. The result is a body built almost entirely for protection: overlapping plates of a biopolymer harder than any terrestrial keratin, a compact musculature hidden beneath the shell, and sensory organs tucked deep in the thorax so that a direct hit to the carapace does little more than rattle the plates.

Vanguard field reports describe Chitin as deceptively simple. It does not chase. It does not flank. It plants itself on a tile and extends its pincers when a Vanguard steps within reach. The real danger is the second and third turn: a player who underestimates its hit-point pool, who spends their action economy trying to knock it off a cliff or throw it into a Spitter, will find the pincers closing on their mech's leg joint with a sound like a sheet of metal tearing. Chitin does not need to be clever. It needs to outlast.

In the wider Breach ecosystem, Chitin is prey to the larger Brutes and is occasionally consumed by Spawners, whose regenerative biology treats the chitin plates as a calcium-rich substrate. This makes Chitin populations a useful indicator of Breach density: where Chitin is abundant, the rift is stable and the local ecology is mature. Where Chitin is scarce, the Breach is young, volatile, and full of the smaller, faster threats that Vanguards typically encounter first.

Reader's Guide

Chitin — Breacher, no pilot (it is the creature itself).

Base profile: High HP, moderate Attack, very high Defense. It moves one tile per turn and attacks in the adjacent tile with a pincer strike. Its defining mechanical trait is resistance to displacement: knockback, throw, and drill-through abilities have reduced or no effect on it, making it a stubborn obstacle that must be worn down through repeated direct hits.

In the timeline of a typical match, Chitin appears in mid-to-late waves once the Breach has stabilized enough to support larger fauna. It rarely appears alone; a Spitter or Snapper is usually paired with it to punish the Vanguard for committing to a prolonged melee. The optimal counter is to use the environment — a cliff edge, a Spitter's own acid, or a second Vanguard's attack — to chip the plates before the pincers reach your mech's range.

Narratively, Chitin represents the Breach's indifference. It is not evil, not intelligent in any way the Vanguards can parse. It is a body shaped by an alien ecology to be hard, to be slow, to be there when you arrive. The Breach does not send it as a message. It simply grew, and now it is in the way, and the plates will not yield until someone spends enough turns to make them yield.
