Spider

A rare Vek that lobs Spiderling Eggs down any row it shares with you.

The Spider is a rare Vek from Into the Breach. Spiders have very limited movement, but have the unique ability of throwing a Spiderling Egg on any column or row they are aligned with. This egg traps all surrounding entities in webs upon landing and will hatch into a Spiderling on the next turn.

Background

As a rare Vek, Spiders cannot spawn on the first island, and are limited to one spawn per mission (including its alpha).

The Spider's main point of annoyance is that it can web multiple mechs at once, which becomes especially unfortunate when a move has to be wasted on freeing them rather than protecting the grid or completing the objectives. Artillery attacks are the best way of dealing with Spiders as they hang out behind other Vek and are hard to target with other mech classes. Global and wide area targeting attacks also work very well, such as Electric Whip and particularly Missile Barrage; the latter guarantees taking care of both the Spiderling Egg and the Spider if fully upgraded.

When deploying against Spiders, ensure only one Mech at most gets webbed by their Spiderling Egg. This can be accomplished by deploying near one or two buildings, leaving an empty space between the Mech and the buildings. The Spider will prioritize to web as many targets as possible, stationary buildings included. If lacking global targeting weapons that can attack the Spider and its sticky egg, the Mech used to bait the Spider should also have a weapon that lets it escape webbing while still contributing to neutralizing the spider or other enemies, such as Hydraulic Legs, Teleporter or Boosters.
