Alba's path to Inter Miami began with his release from Barcelona's youth ranks in 2005 for being too small. He rebuilt his career at Cornellà and Valencia, where Unai Emery was a 'key man' in his transition to left-back. Returning to Barcelona in 2012 for €14 million, he became a treble winner in 2015, scoring in the Champions League final against Juventus. His connection with Lionel Messi rendered them one of the most effective attacking duos in world football. After 16 major honours at Barcelona, he joined Inter Miami on 20 July 2023, debuting on 3 August against Orlando City. He won the 2023 Leagues Cup with the club on 20 August, beating Nashville SC on penalties. On 7 October 2025, Alba announced he would retire after the end of the 2025 MLS season. He played his final professional match on 6 December 2025, a 3–1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the MLS Cup championship game.
