Josh Lambert
A father's love transcends the veil, dragging him into a nightmare to save his sleeping son—with a medium's hand to guide him.
Josh Lambert is a central figure in the Insidious franchise, introduced as a husband and father whose son Dalton falls into a mysterious coma. Nine years after his own possession, Josh's memories of his experience in The Further have been repressed. He is divorced from his wife Renai, and his mother Lorraine has recently died. His relationship with his son Dalton has become strained and unpleasant. In the events of Insidious: The Red Door, Josh attempts to heal things between them while dropping Dalton off at college, but ends with them in conflict. Josh later discovers that his father Ben Burton, who he believed abandoned his family when he was young, also had the ability to astral project but believed the things he saw were a result of mental illness.
Lore & Background
Josh's first foray into The Further reveals that a malevolent entity known as the red-faced demon has trapped his son Dalton's soul. With the help of paranormal investigator Elise Rainier, Josh learns to control his inherited projection to hunt down the demon. Throughout the series, he faces recurring threats from the past, including the red-faced demon and his own dark history with possession. In Insidious: The Red Door, Josh begins being haunted by the spirit of a man, eventually discovering that it is his father Ben Burton who he believed abandoned his family when he was young. Josh researches his father and discovers that he killed himself while institutionalized in a mental hospital. Renai reveals the truth about what happened to their family a decade ago and that his father also had the ability to astral project but believed the things he saw were a result of mental illness. Josh meets his father's spirit in The Further, who guides him back to the living world.
Reader's Guide
The universe of Insidious operates on a metaphysical plane known as The Further, a dark dimension parallel to our own where human souls can become trapped upon astral projection. This realm is governed by the laws of spiritual resonance rather than physical logic, allowing entities to manifest based on fear and memory. Historical events predating the films suggest that certain individuals possess an innate ability to project their consciousness while sleeping or in deep meditation. These 'walkers' are often unaware of their gift until a traumatic event forces it into action. The Further is populated by various spirits, some benevolent guides like Elise, and others malevolent predators who hunt for hosts. The underlying rules dictate that if a projector's physical body remains vulnerable in the real world while their soul is trapped in the Further, they risk permanent death or possession. Furthermore, entities from this realm can cross over into our world through 'doors' or weak points, often targeting those with strong emotional ties to the living.
