Reduviidae
A large family of mostly predatory true bugs.
The Reduviidae, a large family within the true bugs (order Hemiptera, suborder Heteroptera), are found worldwide. Along with the Nabidae, they are almost exclusively terrestrial ambush predators, unlike most other predatory Hemiptera, which are aquatic. The main exceptions are blood-sucking ectoparasites in the subfamily Triatominae, some South American species of which can transmit Chagas disease.
Most members of this family are fairly easy to identify, though there are spectacular exceptions. They typically have a narrow neck, a sturdy build, and a curved, formidable proboscis (also called a rostrum). Large specimens should be handled with caution, if at all, as they may defend themselves with a very painful stab from this proboscis.

Almost all species in the family are predatory, aside from a few blood-sucking ones, some of which are important disease vectors. Over 7,000 species have been described, spread across more than 20 recognized subfamilies, making it one of the largest families in the Hemiptera. The name Reduviidae comes from the type genus, *Reduvius*, which itself derives from the Latin *reduvia*, meaning "hangnail" or "remnant"—possibly inspired by the lateral flanges on the abdomen of many species.
Common genera include many, but some subfamilies have their own common names: Ambush bugs (subfamily Phymatinae), Thread-legged bugs (subfamily Emesinae, including the genus *Emesaya*), Kissing bugs or cone-headed bugs (subfamily Triatominae, unusual for being mostly blood-suckers and important disease vectors), Wheel bugs (genus *Arilus*, including the North American *Arilus cristatus*), and Grass assassin bugs (genus *Lopodytes*).
**Morphology**
Adults range from about 12 to 36 mm (0.47 to 1.42 inches) long, depending on the species. They most often have an elongated head with a distinct narrowed neck, long legs, and prominent, segmented, tubular mouthparts (the proboscis or rostrum). Most species are brightly colored in shades of brown, black, red, or orange.
The family's most distinctive feature is that the tip of the proboscis fits into a ridged groove on the prosternum, which can be used to produce sound by stridulation. The bug makes sound by rasping its proboscis against these ridges (the stridulitrum). These sounds often discourage predators.
