Masaba Masaba is an Indian biographical drama television series based on the life of Masaba Gupta. It is written and directed by Sonam Nair and produced by Ashvini Yardi's Viniyard Films.
The series stars Masaba Gupta and her mother, Neena Gupta, playing themselves. It premiered on Netflix on 28 August 2020, and the second season premiered on 29 July 2022. The series is a scripted version of Masaba Gupta's life, featuring her family, her love life, and her career as a fashion designer, with Masaba and Neena playing fictionalized versions of themselves.
Plot
Masaba and her friends and family are left in a stir when an apparent rumor indicating her rocky marriage is featured in the newspaper. Despite speculation, she attends an award function with her husband, Vinay, hoping to hush everyone. However, after the program concludes, it is revealed the couple has decided to end things, and upon Vinay's insistence, Masaba makes the news public through Instagram. She moves in with her mother, Neena Gupta, and struggles with the separation, her mother's constant interference, and unwanted social scrutiny, which begins to affect her professional life.
She eventually moves out to work on a new collection in peace. Her collection launch titled "Hot mess," inspired by her own life, is a disaster. Her therapist tells her that her survival instinct is high because she always finds a way of escaping her problems. Set to make things right, Masaba faces her infuriated investors, who warn her to fix things before it's too late.
She relaunches the collection, using her own employees as models to emphasize that "Hot Mess" celebrates imperfections. She then meets Vinay to sell off their house, marking the proper ending of her relationship. She apologizes to her main investor, Mr. Rana, who instead informs her that her relaunch posts have been taken positively by the industry. Masaba breaks down in tears, and Mr. Rana apologizes for not believing in her at first, then starts to take a romantic liking towards her.
Her next collection launch takes a sad turn when the audience leaves to see wannabe-influencer/designer Qayannat's collection. Amidst tension, she takes a pregnancy test, which comes out negative, straining her relationship with her mother. She launches "House of Shadi" for wedding clothes and finds herself in a weird relationship with the groom, while hinting at interest towards Mr. Rana. She eventually makes a choice and settles for the best.
