Last updated

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Sporting Club (HAL or HASC) is an Indian institutional multi-sports club based in Bangalore, best known for its football team. Named after the company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, the club has competed in the top tiers of Karnataka football and the I-League. Nicknamed "the pilots", they used the Bangalore Football Stadium as their home ground before temporarily shutting down activities in 2014.

History

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Sports Club, known as HAL SC, traces its roots to the 1950s and became part of the Bangalore District Football Association (BDFA) in the 1990s. The club’s first major silverware came in 1952 when it won the Stafford Challenge Cup. It started in the Bangalore A Division league and claimed that title in 2000. Before a revival in 2006, HAL had already secured BDFA Super Division championships in 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2005.

The team also competed in the 2001–02 NFL season. In 2006, despite finishing third in the NFL Second Division, HAL earned promotion to the Premier Division because first-place Tata Football Academy could not field a professional side. The club then became runners-up in the 2010 I-League 2nd Division, gathering 16 points from seven matches as ONGC FC took the top spot. That second-place finish earned HAL a spot in the 2010–11 I-League, making it the second South Indian team in the top flight after Viva Kerala.

On the final day of that season, HAL beat defending champions Dempo 4–2, with Xavier Vijay Kumar scoring twice, to avoid relegation. The club later won the 2012–13 Bengaluru Super Division title. After finishing eighth out of nine teams in the 2013–14 BDFA Super Division, HAL temporarily suspended operations in December 2014. Coach H. Chandrashekhar noted the management had informed the BDFA secretary.

Reports of a comeback surfaced after selection trials in 2019. In the 2023–24 BDFA Super Division League, HAL finished fourth.
