Paranthropus is a genus of extinct hominins that includes three widely accepted species: *P. robustus*, *P. boisei*, and *P. aethiopicus*. They existed from roughly 2.9 million years ago to at least 1 million years ago, spanning the end of the Pliocene through the Middle Pleistocene. Whether Paranthropus is a valid genus is debated; some researchers consider it synonymous with Australopithecus, and the group is often called the robust australopithecines. Their skulls were heavily built, with a prominent sagittal crest along the top—similar to a gorilla's—indicating powerful chewing muscles. They also had broad, herbivorous teeth adapted for grinding. These hominins were bipedal, but despite their sturdy heads, their bodies were relatively small. For *P. robustus* males, average weight was about 40 kg (88 lb) and height around 132 cm (4 ft); females averaged 32 kg (71 lb) at 110 cm (3 ft 7 in). For *P. boisei* males, average weight was about 50 kg (110 lb) and height 137 cm (4 ft 6 in); females averaged 34 kg (75 lb) at 124 cm (4 ft 1 in).
Paranthropus species were generally generalist feeders, though *P. robustus* was likely an omnivore while *P. boisei* seems to have been herbivorous, possibly favoring abundant bulbotubers. Their societies may have been polygamous and patrilocal, but no modern analogues exist for australopithecine social structures. They are associated with bone tools. They typically lived in woodlands and coexisted with some early human species, including *A. africanus*, *H. habilis*, and *H. erectus*. They were preyed upon by large carnivores of the time, such as crocodiles, leopards, sabertoothed cats, and hyenas.

The name "Paranthropus" comes from Ancient Greek *para* (beside or alongside) and *anthropos* (man). The type specimen, a male braincase (TM 1517), was discovered by schoolboy Gert Terblanche at the Kromdraai fossil site, about 70 km (43 mi) southwest of Pretoria, South Africa. By 1988, at least six individuals had been found in the same area, now known as the Cradle of Humankind.
