The holotype specimen OH 5 was discovered by Mary Leakey on July 17, 1959, at Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania. Louis Leakey described it a month later, initially naming it 'Zinjanthropus boisei' after the medieval term for East Africa and benefactor Charles Watson Boise. The skull was nicknamed 'Nutcracker Man' due to its large teeth and jaws. It was later reclassified as Paranthropus boisei, though some argue it belongs in Australopithecus. Other notable specimens include Peninj 1 (1964), KNM-ER 406 (1970), KGA10-525 (1997), and OH 80 (2013), which provided the first definitive bodily elements.
