Orrorin

**Orrorin** is an extinct genus of great ape belonging to the hominin tribe, with fossils found in Kenya’s Miocene Lukeino Formation and Pliocene Mabaget Formation. The genus contains two species: the type species **O. tugenensis**, described in 2001, and **O. praegens**, which was reassigned to this genus in 2022.

**Discovery and naming**

The first piece of the *O. tugenensis* holotype—a lower molar—was uncovered by Martin Pickford in 1974 and described the following year. The rest of the holotype was recovered by a team led by Brigitte Senut and Pickford from the French National Museum of Natural History. Starting October 17, 2000, 20 fossils were collected from four sites in the Lukeino Formation. Those from Cheboit and Aragai are the oldest, dating to 6.1 million years ago, while specimens from Kapsomin and Kapcheberek come from higher, younger layers (5.7 million years ago). Senut and colleagues formally named and described *O. tugenensis* in 2001.

The second species, *O. praegens*, was first described by Ward in 1985 and Ward & Hill in 1988. It was initially called *Homo antiquus praegens* by Ferguson in 1989, based on a mandible (KNM-TH 13150) known as the Tabarin mandible, discovered in the Pliocene Mabaget Formation of Kenya in the early 1980s. This mandible had previously been placed in *Ardipithecus ramidus* (or cf. *A. cf. ramidus*), “*Ardipithecus*” *praegens*, or “*Praeanthropus*” *praegens*. Between 2005 and 2011, the Franco-Kenyan Kenya Palaeontology Expedition collected additional remains of *O. praegens*. These, together with the Tabarin mandible, were classified by Pickford et al. (2022) as separate from *Homo* and assigned to *Orrorin* as *O. praegens*.

**Etymology**

The genus name *Orrorin* (plural *Orroriek*) means “original man” in the Tugen language. The species name *O. tugenensis* refers to the Tugen Hills in Kenya, where the first fossil was found in 2000. The epithet *O. praegens* is Latin for 'before the people' or 'preceding the people'.

**Fossils**

The 20 *O. tugenensis* specimens are thought to come from at least five individuals. They include: the back part of a mandible in two pieces; a symphysis and several isolated teeth; three fragments of femora; a partial humerus; a proximal phalanx; and a distal thumb phalanx.

*Orrorin* had small teeth compared to its body size.

Its dentition—small post-canines and microdonty—resembles modern humans, though some researchers caution that early Homo members were megadont. The genus thus remains central to ongoing debates about the origins of bipedalism and the hominin family tree.
