Java Man

Java Man, classified today as *Homo erectus erectus* (and previously called *Anthropopithecus erectus* or *Pithecanthropus erectus*), is a set of early human fossils unearthed on the Indonesian island of Java in 1891 and 1892. Its age is estimated at between 700,000 and 1,000,000 years. At the time of discovery, it was the oldest hominid fossil ever found, and it remains the defining specimen for the subspecies *Homo erectus erectus*. The finds—a tooth, a skullcap, and a thighbone—were made at Trinil, along the Solo River in East Java, by a team led by Dutch anatomist Eugène Dubois.

Dubois argued that these fossils represented the "missing link" between apes and humans, initially naming the species *Anthropopithecus erectus* and later changing it to *Pithecanthropus erectus*. The discovery sparked intense debate. Within a decade, nearly eighty books or articles had been written about Dubois's finds. Few scientists accepted his claim that Java Man was a transitional form; some dismissed the fossils as belonging to apes, others as modern humans, and many considered them a primitive evolutionary side branch unrelated to modern humans. In the 1930s, Dubois controversially described *Pithecanthropus* as built like a "giant gibbon"—a widely misunderstood attempt to reinforce his missing-link theory. Eventually, similarities between Java Man and *Sinanthropus pekinensis* (Peking Man) led Ernst Mayr in 1950 to reclassify both as *Homo erectus*, placing them directly in the human evolutionary tree.

To distinguish Java Man from other *Homo erectus* populations, some scientists began treating it as a subspecies, *Homo erectus erectus*, in the 1970s. Other *Homo erectus* fossils found earlier in the twentieth century at Sangiran and Mojokerto in Java are older than Dubois's finds. Since 1900, the Java Man fossils have been housed in the Netherlands, first at the Rijksmuseum van Geologie en Mineralogie and later at Naturalis.

Eugène Dubois, a Dutch anatomist, favored the theory that Southeast Asia was the cradle of humanity because great apes such as gibbons and orangutans lived there. In October 1887, he abandoned his academic career and left for the Dutch East Indies to search for the fossilized ancestor of modern man. Having received no funding, he joined the Dutch East Indies Army as a military surgeon. After excavating caves in Sumatra and finding abundant fossils of large mammals, he moved to Java in 1890. Assisted by convict laborers and two army corporals, Dubois began searching along the Solo River near Trinil in August 1891. His team soon excavated a molar and a skullcap, which he first named Anthropopithecus. In August 1892, a long femur was found 50 feet from the original find, and Dubois renamed the specimen Anthropopithecus erectus, later Pithecanthropus erectus.
