Homo rudolfensis is an extinct species of archaic human from the Early Pleistocene of East Africa, living about 2 million years ago. It coexisted with several other hominins, and its classification remains debated, with some researchers recommending it be placed in the genus Australopithecus or Kenyanthropus, or synonymized with Homo habilis. No bodily remains have been definitively assigned to the species beyond the lectotype skull KNM-ER 1470 and other partial skull aspects.

The first fossils were discovered in 1972 along Lake Turkana in Kenya, detailed by Richard Leakey the following year. The key specimen, a large and nearly complete skull (KNM-ER 1470), was discovered by Bernard Ngeneo. Leakey classified the remains under the genus Homo but did not assign them to a species. The fossils were initially thought to date to 2.9 million years ago, challenging existing models of human evolution, but were redated to about 2 million years ago in 1977. In 1992, Bernard Wood formally proposed the species Homo rudolfensis, suggesting these remains represent a different Homo species, coexisting with H. habilis and H. ergaster/H. erectus. The species name rudolfensis was proposed by Valery Alekseyev in 1978 using the genus Pithecanthropus, later changed to Homo.
