Homo naledi

Homo naledi is an extinct species of archaic human discovered in 2013 in the Rising Star Cave system, Gauteng province, South Africa, part of the Cradle of Humankind. Dating to the Middle Pleistocene 335,000–236,000 years ago, the species is known from over 1,550 bone specimens representing at least 15 individuals, making it one of the richest fossil hominin assemblages in Africa. Its mosaic anatomy—combining traits of both Australopithecus and later Homo—along with its small brain size (465–610 cm³) challenges the traditional view that larger brains always confer an evolutionary advantage.

The species was first encountered on 13 September 2013 by cavers Rick Hunter and Steven Tucker, who found hominin fossils at the bottom of the Dinaledi Chamber. After photographs were shown to paleoanthropologists, an excavation team including six slender women—dubbed the 'Underground Astronauts'—was assembled to retrieve the remains. The chamber, accessible only via a 12-meter vertical drop and a narrow passage, yielded more than 1,550 bone pieces from at least 15 individuals, including infants, juveniles, and adults. The holotype specimen, DH1, consists of a partial male calvaria, maxilla, and nearly complete jawbone; the species name naledi means 'star' in the Sotho language.
