**Homo luzonensis** (also called Callao Man, or "Ubag" after a local mythical figure) is an extinct species of archaic human that lived on the island of Luzon in the Philippines during the Late Pleistocene. The only known remains—teeth and finger and toe bones—come from Callao Cave in northern Luzon. These fossils were first thought to belong to modern humans when the first bone was discovered in 2007, but after more specimens turned up, researchers reclassified them as a new species in 2019. The reason: the bones show a strange mix of features, some like modern humans, others like much older hominins such as *Australopithecus* and early *Homo*. The first bone was discovered in 2007 by Filipino archaeologist Armand Mijares during excavation in Callao Cave. In 2010, Mijares and French bioanthropologist Florent Détroit, along with an international team, identified the bone as modern human. But after 13 specimens were found in total—including the original metatarsal—showing a blend of modern and primitive traits, the team reassigned all the cave’s hominin remains to a new species, *Homo luzonensis*, named after the island.
The holotype, CCH6, consists of upper right premolars and molars. The paratypes include: CCH1 (a right third metatarsal), CCH2 and CCH5 (finger bones), CCH3 and CCH4 (toe bones), CCH4 (a left premolar), and CCH9 (a right third molar). CCH7 is a juvenile thighbone shaft. These represent at least three individuals. All specimens are kept at the National Museum of the Philippines in Manila.
No one knows exactly where *Homo luzonensis* fits in the human family tree. DNA extraction has failed, as it has for other tropical hominins. One idea is that, like *Homo floresiensis* on Flores, *H. luzonensis* descended from an early wave of *Homo erectus* that spread across Southeast Asia.
