Gameplay

Super Bomberman 4 is an action game where players lay bombs to destroy enemies or other bombermen. Power-ups allow increasing bomb explosion range, punching or kicking bombs on the ground, or picking them up and throwing them. Explosions can harm any player on the field, including the bomber who placed the bomb. There are two main modes: Normal Game (the campaign, playable with two players) and Battle Game, which has three separate modes. New creatures appear as enemies; when defeated, they turn into eggs. Picking an egg lets the player ride that creature, which comes in organic or mechanical types. Additional eggs can be stored only if they match the creature type already ridden. Some stages have cages with trapped allies; when freed, allies move around destroying soft blocks. Secret warps transport players to bonus stages, accessible only in two-player mode when one player uses the Power Glove to toss the other to the warp. Normal Game requires defeating all enemies to reveal the goal, across five worlds of eight levels each. The seventh level of each world pits Bomberman against the Four Bomber Kings and Great Bomber, with a world boss on the eighth level. Cleared worlds can be revisited, and levels replayed via passwords. Battle Game includes Battle Royale for up to five players (human or CPU) with team options, three CPU difficulty levels, optional revenge carts, and a bonus race for the winner. Ten battle stages are available, changeable with three passwords. Champion Mode allows up to two players to face the Four Bomber Kings and Great Bomber in three rounds, with credits appearing upon victory.

Release and marketing

Japan first saw Super Bomberman 4 on the Super Famicom in April 1996. A month later, a 114-page full-color guide arrived from Shogakukan's Wonder Life Special line, offering a complete normal-game walkthrough, enemy and boss details, level maps, and battle mode tips. An English version finally appeared in 2026 as part of the Super Bomberman Collection.
