Road Trip: The Arcade Edition

Arcade racing with toy cars and weapons.

Takara released Road Trip: The Arcade Edition for the PlayStation 2 in 2002. Known as Gadget Racers in Europe and Choro Q! in Japan, this racing game is based on the earlier Road Trip Adventure. It features small toy cars called Choro-Q or Penny Racers, and adds weapons to shift the gameplay toward a more arcade-style racing experience.

Gameplay

Players choose from 10 cars to drive. Game modes include Challenge Race, Drag Racing, and Grand Prix. Completing tracks in Challenge Race and Grand Prix unlocks additional cars. The six tracks are Road Trip Circuit, Road Trip Park, After School, Kid's Room, Road Trip Highway, and Silver Village. Each track has short, middle, and long lengths, and can also be played in reverse, for a total of 36 track variations. Road Trip Circuit begins as an oval and expands into a massive shoreline circuit. Road Trip Park is an offroad track set in a nature park with bridges, jungle gyms, and a short river. After School takes racers around a school after hours; a notable section is the pool area where players must stay on floaties to avoid losing speed. Kid's Room is built from toys and school supplies, featuring a spinning tops arena similar to Beyblade toys. Road Trip Highway is a futuristic course with tall buildings, holographic billboards, potholes, and electric fences that slow cars. Silver Village starts in a small village then enters a dangerous mountain with broken bridges, oddly colored caves, and snowmen, ending with a ski jump. Successful players can unlock up to 100 cars and many parts, including the legendary Devil Magnimum engine and the Road Trip Hurtle.
