Gameplay
In Getter Love!!, players take the role of a male freshman at Panda High School, racing his friends to find a girlfriend before summer break ends. The player can choose their name, hairstyle, and personality type. The main objective is to develop relationships with female non-player characters and eventually confess love, with the first player to succeed winning the game. There are seven romanceable girls, called the Panda Love Unit: trendy Ayumi Shirai, childish Natsuki Itou, free-spirited Hana Tsuzuki, standoffish Makoto Minagawa, shy Kiiro Amami, sickly Shizuku Morimura, and excitable Meihua Lee. Each girl has distinct personality traits, preferred locations, and conversation topics. An Italian exchange student named Alfonso Roberto Martini serves as the host, explaining the rules and giving updates on each player's progress. At the beginning of a game, one girl is already an acquaintance of the players, making her a bit easier to romance. Players have two in-game weeks to confess; if nobody does, the game ends in a draw. Each day is split into morning, evening, and night phases. In each phase, players pick a location on the map, and after the last choice, all players and NPCs move at the same time using the Simultaneous Activity Map System (SAMS). During SAMS, players can dash to get somewhere early or beat a rival, or brake to avoid bumping into someone and causing an unwanted encounter.
Development and release
The idea for Getter Love!! first took shape in December 1995, when designer Kokoro Nakamura was brainstorming a four-player competitive game for the Nintendo 64, which was still new at the time. Inspired by the success of romance titles like Tokimeki Memorial from 1994, Nakamura decided to turn the genre into a multiplayer experience. The game’s title and character names were selected entirely by random fortune-telling. At one stage, the development team considered including as many as 50 potential love interests. Some non-datable characters were modeled after actual Hudson Soft staff members. According to Nakamura, the character Makoto was the favorite among company employees. Getter Love!! was shown at the 1998 Tokyo Game Show and hit stores on December 3 of that year. To build hype, Hudson held an audition on September 24 for actresses to form a real-life idol group called Panda Love Unit. The seven winners appeared in Dengeki Nintendo 64 and The 64 Dream magazines, and performed a live concert in Meguro on December 24, with free entry for magazine subscribers. On December 18, Pony Canyon released a soundtrack album featuring game tracks, some with new lyrics by Kaori Morikawa of the Go-Bang's, sung by Panda Love Unit, along with recorded dialogue from the game.
Reception and legacy
Critics were split on Getter Love!!. Weekly Famitsu scored it 26 out of 40, while Game Criticism noted its competitive design made it more approachable than typical dating sims. English outlets N64 Magazine and Total Control, reviewing imported copies, deemed it unplayable due to the heavy reliance on Japanese text. A Dreamcast spinoff arrived on September 27, 2001, swapping party games for typing challenges with the Dreamcast keyboard; Makoto, Ayumi, and Shizuku remain dateable, while the rest of the cast, including Alfonso and Reika, appear as non-playable characters. Two additional typing-focused spinoffs launched for i-mode mobile phones on October 25, 2001, and February 12, 2002. Characters from Getter Love!! also made cameos in the 2001 Game Boy Advance title Hatena Satena. An English fan translation patch, developed over four and a half years, was released in December 2023 to mark the game’s 25th anniversary.
