Gameplay

Deca Sports offers several modes: Open Match for quick play in any of the ten sports, Tournament Mode to become champion in a single event, Deca League to compete against multiple teams across all sports, and Deca Challenge for specialized skill tests. The game does not use Miis; instead, eight teams are available: Average Joes, Speed Strikers, Hard Hitters, Crusaders, Boost Force, Mad Maidens, Team Thunder, and Disco Knights. Each team consists of small, medium, and large players of both sexes. Small athletes are nimble but weak, large athletes are powerful but slower and harder to control, and medium players balance speed and strength. In Deca League, prolonged use of one team member causes fatigue and reduced performance. Each sport has a unique control scheme. In Beach Volleyball, the game controls player movement while the player uses the Wii Remote to return and pass the ball. Figure Skating uses the Nunchuk's analog stick to follow routines, with Wii Remote shakes executing maneuvers in colored circles. Archery requires holding the B Button to draw, aiming with the pointer, and releasing within ten seconds. Badminton uses the Wii Remote as a racquet, with timing and directional control. Basketball uses the analog stick for movement, buttons for passing, and Wii Remote gestures for shooting or stealing.

Development

Deca Sports was first shown at TGS 2007 under the title Deca Sporta, with a planned December release in Japan. A Hudson representative noted that the studio did not expect high review scores, citing simplicity and graphics quality as typical complaints for Wii games. The game went gold in April 2008. Mike Samachisa, head of Hudson's console team, stated that localizing the game for English markets made sense because the sports are played worldwide. The idea was to combine events from the Summer Olympics, Winter Olympics, and X Games for broad appeal. All modes are unlocked from the start for accessibility. Adidas partnered with Hudson to have its logo appear in-game, and the text uses DynaComware's proprietary font.

Reception

Deca Sports received mixed-to-negative reviews, with a Metacritic score of 50 out of 100. GameSpot rated it 3.5 out of 10, IGN gave it 4.5 out of 10, and 1UP assigned a D+. Despite poor critical reception, Hudson Soft reported sales of 2 million units. GameSpot nominated it for 'Worst Game Everyone Played' in its 2008 video game awards.
