Background

The second season was released in full on February 14, 2014, at 12:01 a.m. PT. Before season 1, reviewers had debated binge viewing. Alessandra Stanley felt the show was best watched one episode at a time, calling it a slow, ponderous immorality play. Nancy deWolf Smith compared binge watchers to people eating a delicacy like a bag of M&M's, while Hank Stuever disagreed, saying viewers might power through all 13 hours. After seeing a four-episode preview of season 2, James Poniewozik said he could easily power through the season in a free weekend, and Stanley found it binge-worthy. Ellen Gray, however, believed binge-watching did not serve the season well.

Post-production

Netflix announced on December 4, 2013, that the 13-episode season would be released on February 14, 2014, and confirmed that Francis and Claire would continue their ruthless rise. A trailer was released on December 13 after season 1 received four Golden Globe nominations, and the first full trailer came on January 6. Willimon said he thought about future seasons while conceiving season 2. On February 4, 2014, Netflix renewed the series for a third season. In May 2014, the season became one of the first Netflix offerings available in 4K video format.
