The Black Egg
A prison of darkness holding a blinding light, the final seal on Hallownest's fate.
The Black Egg is a colossal, obsidian-like sphere hidden deep within the deepest recesses of Hallownest's Forgotten Crossroads and later the City of Tears' lower districts. It serves as the physical vessel for the Radiance, the sun-like deity of pure light that was cast out by the Pale King. Sealed beneath layers of rock and guarded by a massive beetle construct known as the Black Egg Guardian, this object represents the ultimate failure of the kingdom's attempts to suppress the plague.

Lore & Background
Despite the Pale King's efforts, the Radiance eventually found a way to breach the seal from within, corrupting the mind of the guardian and twisting it into a monstrous form. The egg itself became a beacon of corruption, slowly leaking the Infection that would consume the kingdom. It stands as a grim monument to the inevitability of the Light's return, proving that even the deepest shadows cannot hold back the sun forever.
Reader's Guide
The history of the Black Egg is inextricably linked to the fall of Hallownest's creator. When the Pale King realized the Vessels were not enough to stop the Radiance, he sought a more permanent solution. He carved out a cavern deep beneath the world and placed the deity within this massive egg, intending to bury it forever. However, the Light is persistent.
Over time, the Radiance's influence seeped through the shell, corrupting the mind of the guardian assigned to watch over it. This corruption eventually spread outward, fueling the Infection that ravaged the kingdom above. The egg became a focal point for the plague. In the end, the seal was broken not by force from outside, but by the sheer will of the Light pushing back against its prison.
When the final vessel arrived to confront the source, they shattered the Black Egg, releasing the Radiance into the open air and forcing a confrontation that would determine the fate of all life in Hallownest.
