Paul Coffey

Second all-time among NHL defencemen in career scoring.

Last updated

In the 1980 NHL entry draft, the Edmonton Oilers selected Coffey with the sixth overall pick.[1]

Life and work

He became only the second defenceman in NHL history to score 40 goals in a season during the Oilers' first Stanley Cup-winning season, 1983–84.[1] In the 1985–86 season Coffey scored 48 goals, breaking Bobby Orr's record for regular season goals by a defenceman.[2] After helping Edmonton to a third Cup in 1986–87, Coffey was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins on November 24, 1987.[3] Coffey spent four and a half seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, contributing to the franchise's first Stanley Cup championship in the 1990–91 season.[4]

What the cited sources add

Coffey initially joined the Oilers' staff as a skills coach during the 2017-18 season before becoming a special adviser and then an assistant coach.[5] Head coach Kris Knoblauch stated that Coffey's return would benefit the team both as a team and as a staff.[5] During a February 2014 coaching assignment, Coffey received a gross misconduct penalty for using a "discriminatory slur," leading to a three-game suspension.[6] A car dealership in Bolton, Ontario was owned by Coffey.[7]
