Bill Quackenbush
First defenceman to win the Lady Byng Trophy.
Last updated
Bill Quackenbush was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman who played for the Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League (NHL). He is notable as the first defenceman to win the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, awarded for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct, after playing the entire 1948–49 season without recording a penalty.
Background
Quackenbush was born Hubert George Quackenbush in Toronto, Ontario, and nicknamed Bill by an aunt. He played youth hockey on outdoor rinks during the Great Depression and was a top high school athlete, also excelling in football and soccer. He chose hockey over a professional football career. He began junior hockey with the Toronto Native Sons and later played for the Brantford Lions, catching the attention of the Detroit Red Wings.
Quackenbush signed with the Red Wings as a free agent in 1942. After a wrist injury and assignment to the American Hockey League, he earned a regular position in 1943–44.
He set a career high of 11 goals in 1945–46. His streak of 131 consecutive games without a penalty began in 1947–48 and continued through the 1948–49 season, during which he won the Lady Byng Trophy. Detroit general manager Jack Adams disliked the award and traded Quackenbush to the Boston Bruins.
In Boston, Quackenbush became a fan favorite, with his offensive style compared to Eddie Shore. He played alongside his brother Max during the 1950–51 season. He retired in 1956 with only 95 penalty minutes over 774 games, averaging seven seconds per game. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1976.
