Francis Bacon, 1st Viscount St Alban (22 January 1561 – 9 April 1626) was an English philosopher and statesman who served as Attorney General and Lord Chancellor of England under King James I. Bacon argued for the importance of natural philosophy, guided by the scientific method, and his works remained influential throughout the Scientific Revolution. Often called the father of empiricism, he maintained that scientific knowledge could be built solely through inductive reasoning and meticulous observation of nature. He advocated for a skeptical, methodical approach to prevent scientists from deceiving themselves. While his specific Baconian method had limited lasting impact, his broader insistence on a skeptical methodology established him as a founder of the scientific method, providing a new rhetorical and theoretical framework whose practical details remain debated. He promoted scientific experimentation as a means to glorify God and fulfill scripture. Bacon also contributed to library science, devising a cataloging system dividing books into history, poetry, and philosophy, with further subdivisions. He famously wrote that some books should be tasted, others swallowed, and a few chewed and digested. A fringe theory, the Baconian theory of Shakespeare authorship, later proposed that he wrote some or all of Shakespeare’s plays. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, under a medieval Latin curriculum, Bacon was the first recipient of the Queen’s counsel designation in 1597. Knighted after James I’s accession, he was created Baron Verulam in 1618 and Viscount St Alban in 1621. He died childless in 1626 at age 65, and both titles became extinct. He is buried at St Michael’s Church, St Albans.
