Life and work
Born Abhay Charan De on 1 September 1896 in Calcutta, he was raised in a religious Gaudiya Vaishnava family.[3][4] In 1922 he met Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, who instructed him to spread Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's message in English.[5][6] He received spiritual initiation in 1933 and was given the name Abhay Charanaravinda.[7] In 1944 he began publishing the English magazine Back to Godhead.[8]
He accepted the renounced order of life in 1959, becoming A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami.[9][10] At age 69 he traveled to America on a cargo ship, arriving in Boston on 17 September 1965.[11][12] He established ISKCON in New York in 1966 and opened a second center in San Francisco in 1967.[13][14] He circled the world fourteen times in ten years, opening over one hundred temples and initiating nearly five thousand disciples.[15]
