Life and work
In 1439, Angelico completed the San Marco Altarpiece, which created a new religious genre called sacra conversazione.[3] Fra Angelico died in 1455 while staying at a Dominican convent in Rome.[4][5] By 1423, Angelico had become a member of the San Domenico convent in Fiesole, taking the religious name Fra Giovanni.[6][5] A group of friars, including Angelico, relocated from Fiesole to the recently constructed San Marco convent in Florence during 1436.[7][5]
Angelico served as Prior after going back to the Fiesole convent, a period that lasted from 1449 until 1452.[8][5]
What the cited sources add
The Rossetti account states that Vasari wrote Angelico was offered the Archbishopric of Florence by Pope Nicholas V and refused it.[5] The same source notes that Angelico was known to contemporaries as Fra Giovanni da Fiesole and by Vasari as Fra Giovanni Angelico.[5] The Savage account records that Angelico died on 18 March 1455.[9] The Morris article reports that two missing panels of the San Marco Altarpiece were discovered in Oxford in the home of curator Jean Preston.[10][11]
Those panels were sold at auction in Dorset for £1.7 million in April 2007.[12][11] The Art Story account states that Angelico fused piety and artistic innovation to create deeply moving frescoes and altarpieces.[13] The Papini encyclopedia entry gives Angelico's birth year as 1387 and his death date as 14 July 1455.[14]
