Architectural Origins and Design
Constructed in 1936 by Guy Morgan and Partners, this Grade II listed structure stands as a premier example of Art Deco and Streamline Moderne architecture within Smithfield. The architects, who previously collaborated with the renowned Edwin Lutyens, designed an impressive curved façade featuring projecting wings and distinctive setbacks on the upper eighth and ninth floors. The building's construction utilized a steel frame clad in specially commissioned beige bricks manufactured by Williamson Cliff Ltd in Lincolnshire.
As one of the earliest residential apartment blocks in the wider Clerkenwell area, it introduced modern amenities such as a basement swimming pool and a roof garden to the neighborhood north of the City of London. Its unique design elements, including an original entrance hall with marble flooring inlaid with the Charterhouse arms, set a high standard for luxury living during the interwar period.
Cultural Legacy in Film and Television
Although physically located on Charterhouse Square, the building achieved global fame as the fictional Whitehaven Mansions, the London residence of Agatha Christie's detective Hercule Poirot. For twenty-four years, from 1989 to 2013, it served as a primary filming location for the LWT television series Agatha Christie's Poirot, with both exterior shots and interior scenes capturing its distinctive character. Its cinematic appeal continued well beyond the conclusion of that series; in March 2019, production teams extensively filmed the building for the Batman spin-off Pennyworth, utilizing it as a home and neighborhood setting for leading characters. Furthermore, the exterior made a notable appearance in the 2022 film See How They Run, representing the residence of specific characters, thereby cementing its status as an iconic backdrop for British television and cinema productions.
