Cirrhitops hubbardi, known as Hubbard's hawkfish or the white-spotted hawkfish, belongs to the hawkfish family Cirrhitidae and lives in the western Pacific Ocean. Its classification has shifted over time. Originally described in 1943 as *Amblycirrhitus hubbardi* by American ichthyologist Leonard Peter Schultz—based on a specimen from the reef at Enderbury Island in the Phoenix Islands—it was later considered a synonym of the redbarred hawkfish (*Cirrhitops fasciatus*) when South African ichthyologist J. L. B. Smith created the genus *Cirrhitops* in 1951, treating that genus as monotypic. In 1963, John Ernest Randall showed that the color pattern of this species consistently differs from the redbarred hawkfish, confirming it as a valid species. The Japanese population may be separate from the central Pacific one and could represent a new species. The specific name honors Commander Dr. H. D. Hubbard of the United States Navy, for his cooperation with Schultz during work aboard the USS *Bushnell* in the South Pacific.
This fish has the upper two and lower six pectoral fin rays unbranched. Its dorsal fin contains ten spines, each tipped with a tassel of cirri, and the membranes between them have moderate incisions, except for a deep cut between the fifth and sixth spines. The anal fin has three spines and six soft rays. A small number of tiny teeth are present on the roof of the mouth. The upper three-fifths of the preoperculum’s margin is coarsely serrated, while the rest is smooth. The snout’s dorsal profile is convex. The caudal fin is truncate, and the pelvic fin extends past the anus. Maximum total length reaches 25 cm (9.8 in). The head and body are brownish, with fine white spots on the head, small white blotches on the body, and a reddish caudal fin.
This species occurs in the western Pacific, recorded from the Ogasawara Islands off southern Japan, and farther east in the Gilbert, Phoenix, and Line Islands of Kiribati, Tonga, Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, the Tuamotus, and the Pitcairn Islands. Its disjunct distribution may mean it has not yet been found elsewhere, or that two species exist. It is carnivorous and inhabits rocky and coral reefs at depths from 2 to 27 m (6 ft 7 in to 88 ft 7 in).
