Cirrhitus is a genus of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the hawkfish family, Cirrhitidae. Members of this genus inhabit tropical reefs across the globe.
The genus was first described in 1803 by French naturalist Bernard Germain de Lacépède, who made it a monotypic genus for his new species *Cirrhitus maculatus* from Mauritius. It was later determined that Lacépède’s *C. maculatus* was the same as *Labrus pinnulatus*, a species described in manuscript by German naturalist Johann Reinhold Forster from Tahiti. Forster’s work formed the basis of a description published in 1801 by Johann Gottlob Schneider in the *Systema Ichthyologiae* by Bloch and Schneider, though the Catalog of Fishes credits the name to Forster. The genus name comes from *cirrhus*, meaning a lock of hair or barbel. Lacépède did not explain what feature the name refers to. These hawkfishes have a deep body that is not highly compressed laterally. They have large heads with blunt snouts and a fringe of cirri on the rear edge of the front nostril. The mouth is moderately large, with an outer row of canine teeth and an inner row of villiform teeth; teeth also appear on the roof of the mouth. The upper edge of the preoperculum may be smooth or finely serrated, and the gill cover has two flattened spines.
