Background and release

The song was written by John Ryan, Jamie Scott, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Julian Bunetta, who also produced it. It is the second single from the album to be written by band members, following "Story of My Life." Bunetta told MTV News that the title reflects the late-night hours when most of the album's memories were made, between midnight and five in the morning. On 24 January 2014, Payne announced via a YouTube video that "Midnight Memories" would be the third single from the album outside the US.

Music video

The official music video was filmed in London in December 2013 and premiered on Vevo at midnight on 31 January 2014. It shows the band leaving a house party, taking over a take-away, riding motorized scooters with five elderly women, stealing a police boat on the River Thames, and ending on Tower Bridge. The video has accumulated over 200 million views.

Controversy

In December 2013, Def Leppard asked their lawyers to examine whether "Midnight Memories" resembled "Pour Some Sugar on Me." Guitarists Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell told Billboard they were not pursuing legal action. Collen described the songs as "very similar in structure," while Campbell noted the chords are a basic one–four–five blues progression and attributed the similarity to production, sound, vocals, and reverb.
