Background and release
The song was written by Louis Tomlinson, John Ryan, Jamie Scott, and Julian Bunetta. Bunetta explained to MTV News that the lyrics came from a discussion about how telling someone they make you strong can feel like pressure, causing people to pull away. He noted that Tomlinson's long-term relationship with Eleanor Calder influenced the theme, which challenges the idea of men needing to uphold a "strong" philosophy. On 18 November, "Strong" was one of three tracks released ahead of the album, alongside "Diana" and "Midnight Memories."
Reception
Chris Payne of Billboard called it a love song in an earnest, mid-tempo vein similar to "Don't Forget Where You Belong," noting that many boy bands and soft rockers have executed such songs before.
