A Polygon article notes that Abraham and Franck's 2021 novel Leviathan Falls marked the end of an era for the authors.[5] The same article states that The Captive's War books show no hint of caution or reserve.[5] A Reactor review describes the series as quietly radical and intensely hopeful.[6] That review also notes that The Faith of Beasts includes details about how the Carryx function as both individuals and parts of a massive empire organism.[6]
The Reactor review calls the novel full of huge revelations delivered quietly.[6]
