Synopsis
John Denver plays the country singer son of Annie Nations (Jessica Tandy), a woman deeply attached to her Blue Ridge Mountain farmland and the memory of her late husband, Hector (Hume Cronyn). She faces a life-changing decision: move off the mountain and sell her land to a real estate developer, as her son wants, or stay cloaked in her memories. The character of Annie Nations is based on real-life Arie Carpenter, who told interviewers, "They want me to sell an' move away from here, but I won't do it. It's just home — That's all."
Reception
The film received positive reviews. John J. O'Connor of The New York Times noted that while the surface is gentle, the subtext is far from comforting, calling Foxfire "a sturdy vehicle" that Tandy takes "for a memorable spin." Don Shirley of the Los Angeles Times described it as "immensely affecting" and said it "illuminates these themes with an irresistible glow," adding that it preserves the performances of Cronyn and Tandy.
