Lost Soul Aside

A solo project that grew into a Sony-published action RPG.

Lost Soul Aside

Lost Soul Aside is an upcoming action-adventure role-playing game developed by Ultizero Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The story follows Kaser as he tries to rescue his sister Louisa and the rest of humanity from an enemy called the Voidrax. The project began as a solo effort by developer Yang Bing, later joining Sony's China Hero Project and expanding into a team-based production. The game is planned for release on PlayStation 5 and Windows, with no specific release date confirmed as of 2024.

In terms of gameplay, Lost Soul Aside is a single-player, third-person action-adventure RPG. The player controls Kaser, who is accompanied by a companion named Arena. Arena can transform into weapons and other elements used in combat and exploration. Kaser can wield a sword, greatsword, poleblade, and scythe. He can also unleash Arena powers, which are abilities with offensive and other effects. The game follows a linear path with a few open areas. A character named Lena serves as the manual save system and hub at certain points; she frequently meets Kaser during his journey and records his adventures for her novel. There is also a challenge mode consisting of a hundred waves of enemies, though its official name has not been announced.

The story begins with Kaser and his younger sister Louisa orphaned during a war between the Empire of Celestria and the Kingdom of Frosthold. They later join GLIMMER, a resistance group led by Selene, to fight the Empire's tyranny. During a festival in the capital Primarius, GLIMMER attempts to inspire a rebellion, but the Voidrax—mysterious invaders from other dimensions—arrive and devastate the city, stealing the souls of its people. In the chaos, Kaser falls into an underground laboratory and meets Lord Arena, a dragon-like Voidrax imprisoned there. Kaser merges with Arena's essence, gaining its power, and they escape. Vesper of the Holy Order drags Louisa into the attack to save himself, and her soul is captured. Kaser and his companions then set out to save Louisa and all of humanity.

Kaser, Arena, and Gethya travel to Mount Salvation for answers. They fight and free the four Lords from corrupted Voidrax energy. Their journey leads them to Queen Seleria, who guards the seal imprisoning the Voidrax and their leader Aramon. Aramon once tried to conquer the world and seize its Life Nexus.

Lore & Background

Lost Soul Aside was originally conceived as a solo project by Yang Bing in 2014 while he was a graduate student at Dongguk University in South Korea. After a promotional video uploaded to his YouTube channel in July 2016, Sony took notice and reached out, leading to a meeting in Shanghai later that year. In October 2016, Sony offered the game a place in its China Hero Project, providing funding and technical support. Yang founded Ultizero Games in January 2017 with support from Sony and its partners, and Sony officially became the game's publisher in 2022.

The game's development involved a gradual expansion from a lonely adventure of a person and a dragon to a richer world with additional characters and storylines. The overall tone was established in 2021, setting the direction for the remainder of development. The game was built using Unreal Engine 4, and Yang attributed the long development cycle to early inexperience and the time needed to build a capable team.

Reader's Guide

Lost Soul Aside is significant as a landmark title for Sony's China Hero Project, which began in 2016. Tatsuo Eguchi, President of Sony Interactive Entertainment Shanghai, noted that the game was very important for the project's start, as it led to the idea that Sony could help creators like Yang achieve their dreams by providing know-how and support. The game's journey from a solo student project to a full-scale published title illustrates the potential of the China Hero Project to nurture independent Chinese developers. Its release on PlayStation 5 and Windows in 2025, with mixed critical reception, marks a notable entry in the action-adventure RPG genre, featuring a linear progression with open areas, a companion who transforms into weapons, and a challenge mode with a hundred waves of enemies. The game's story, involving dimensional invaders, soul crystals, and a cosmic battle, reflects the ambitious scope that emerged from its collaborative development process.
