A hack and slash game based on the Attack on Titan anime.

Last updated

Attack on Titan, also known in PAL regions as A.O.T.: Wings of Freedom, is a 2016 hack and slash video game developed by Omega Force and published by Koei Tecmo. It is based on the animated series Attack on Titan, which adapts Hajime Isayama's manga. The game was initially released for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita in Japan in February 2016, with international releases and ports to Windows and Xbox One following in August 2016.

Plot

The game retells key moments from the Attack on Titan manga (chapters 1 through 33), which are also covered by the first season of the anime, alongside new scenarios involving key characters. In 845, when Eren was 10 years old, the Colossal Titan appeared, breached the Wall, and allowed other Titans to rampage. With the Armored Titan preventing access, Wall Maria was abandoned and humanity fell back to Wall Rose. Eren swore revenge and joined the 104th Cadet Corps to become a Scout Regiment member.

Five years later, the Colossal Titan reappeared. Eren fought it alone but failed, then led a squad that ended in failure, with Eren injured and many soldiers killed. When Armin was about to be eaten, Eren sacrificed himself.

Before the Trost District Wall was destroyed, elite Scout Regiment members were on a mission outside the Wall, seeking to reclaim Wall Maria by setting up supply bases and securing a route to Shiganshina District. The Garrison Regiment's resistance and the Scout Regiment's return kept Wall Rose safe. Within the Walls, chaos descended as the damaged Wall was repaired by the power of the Titans, raising questions about whether Eren is an ally or enemy. The Scout Regiment, now joined by Eren, began their 57th mission to the outside world.

Reception

Attack on Titan sold about 150,682 copies in its first week in Japan, outselling Street Fighter V. By April 28, Koei Tecmo reported 280,000 total sales in Japan, and by the 2016/17 fiscal year, 350,000 copies in the West and 700,000 worldwide. The game received generally positive reviews; Famitsu gave it a 34/40, and PlayStation LifeStyle awarded an 8.0 out of 10, calling it a passion project made right. Some other outlets gave mixed reviews.
