Plot
In Universal Century 0083, three years after the One Year War, Zeon ace Anavel Gato infiltrates the Earth Federation's Torrington Base and steals the Gundam GP02A Physalis, a prototype armed with a nuclear bazooka. Test pilot Kou Uraki, lacking combat experience, launches in the Gundam GP01 Zephyranthes and engages Gato briefly before being outmatched. The Federation assigns the newly commissioned Pegasus-class assault ship Albion to recover the GP02A, with Kou and fellow pilot Chuck Keith joining the crew under Captain Eyphar Sinapus, alongside Anaheim Electronics engineer Nina Purpleton. Their pursuit takes them from Australia to Africa, where Kou struggles with real combat conditions but begins to mature. The chase extends into space, where Gato rejoins Aiguille Delaz's fleet. The Delaz Fleet initiates Operation Stardust, beginning with Gato using the GP02A's nuclear bazooka at the Federation Naval Review at Confeito to destroy nearly one-third of the Federation fleet. With the fleet crippled, Delaz captures a space colony and alters its trajectory toward Earth. To counter this, the Albion docks with the Anaheim Electronics factory ship La Vie en Rose, and Kou is entrusted with the Gundam GP03 Dendrobium, an immense weapons platform with multiple I-field shields.
Characters
Kou Uraki is a 19-year-old Federation test pilot who pursues Gato in the GP01 and is assigned to the Albion under Lt South Burning, maturing significantly and developing a relationship with engineer Nina Purpleton. Anavel Gato, an ace pilot nicknamed the Nightmare of Solomon during the One Year War, steals the GP02A to deliver a nuclear strike at Confeito; his past romantic connection with Nina is revealed. Nina Purpleton is an Anaheim Electronics systems engineer who reluctantly allows Kou to pilot the GP01 and gradually develops romantic feelings for him. Eyphar Sinapus, captain of the Albion, defies orders to transmit the GP03 Dendrobium for urgent use and is later executed for mutiny. South Burning commands the mobile suit company aboard the Albion and mentors Kou and Keith, dying after discovering Operation Stardust documents. Chuck Keith is Kou's wingman and best friend, later transferring to Oakly Base after developing a romantic interest in mechanic Mora Bascht. Mora Bascht is the chief mechanic aboard the Albion who develops feelings for Chuck Keith. Kelly Layzner, an ex-Zeon lieutenant and friend to Gato, helps Kou before challenging him in his mobile armor Val-Walo.
Production
Plans for a second Universal Century OVA after War in the Pocket took shape at Sunrise and Bandai Visual in 1990–1991, positioned to bridge the gap between the original series and Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam while capitalizing on the booming OVA market. The production launched in parallel with the feature Mobile Suit Gundam F91, creating schedule pressure but sharpening the concept of a hard-edged military drama centered on Operation Stardust, large fleet actions, and a colony drop in a UC era without Newtypes. The OVA began under director Mitsuko Kase for episodes 1–7, then Takashi Imanishi directed episodes 8–13; producers noted the baton-pass did not alter the broad scenario but pushed the back half toward larger space set pieces and a more overt military tone. Mechanical world-building was divided between Shoji Kawamori, credited for mechanical styling, who respected the established baseline while refining silhouettes and functional motifs, and detailed mecha designs handled by Hajime Katoki and Mika Akitaka alongside others.
