The Ravkan Military

Steel discipline under a general whose ambition outgrows the crown that employs him.

The Ravkan Military is the armed force of the Ravkan Empire and the central instrument of state power in the Grishaverse. Commanded by General Kirigan—widely known as the Darkling—it fields both conventional soldiers and Grisha warriors, though the latter routinely endure suspicion and marginalization within its own ranks. The military operates out of the capital, Razen, and formally serves the Tsar, yet its true loyalty is entangled with the Darkling's personal ambitions, making it as much a faction as a national institution.

For common soldiers like Masha, the Ravkan Military is home, identity, and the only structure that gives their lives meaning. For the court, it is a necessary tool. For the Darkling, it is the engine of a plan that stretches far beyond any single battle. This tension—between duty to the crown and devotion to a general who sees the world as a problem to be solved by power—drives much of the conflict across the series.

Lore & Background

The Ravkan Military is built on a rigid hierarchy that mirrors the empire's broader social order: the Tsar at the top, the Darkling as supreme general, and beneath them a vast body of conscripted and volunteer soldiers. Grisha serve alongside human troops, but their presence is tolerated rather than celebrated. A Grisha soldier is expected to be useful, obedient, and unremarkable—any display of power beyond the approved scope invites suspicion. This climate of quiet prejudice means that many Grisha in the ranks keep their abilities tightly leashed, performing their duties with a vigilance that goes beyond mere professionalism.

The Darkling's command is absolute in practice. He has shaped the military's doctrine, its training, and its strategic thinking over years of service to the crown. Soldiers like Masha speak of him with a mixture of awe and fear; he is the figure who turned a struggling nation into a military power, and the same figure whose ultimate objectives may render the nation itself irrelevant. Loyalists within the ranks see him as Ravka's greatest protector.

Those who look closer see a man who has been quietly redefining what Ravka is for. The military's internal dynamics shift dramatically as the series progresses. What begins as a stable, if tense, institution fractures when the Darkling's true goals become undeniable. Soldiers are forced to choose between the uniform they have worn their whole lives and the person who put it on them.

The Ravkan Military, in the end, becomes a mirror for the Grishaverse's central question: whether an institution built on order can survive when the order was always a mask for a single will.

Reader's Guide

GOAL: Maintain Ravka's military supremacy and execute the strategic vision of its supreme commander. In practice, this means defending the empire's borders, projecting power across the continent, and—according to the Darkling's private agenda—securing the resources and positions necessary to open the Bulk. LEADERSHIP: General Kirigan (the Darkling) holds supreme command. His authority is both formal and personal; he has been the military's figurehead for years, and soldiers' loyalty to him often eclipses their loyalty to the Tsar.

Below him, the chain of command includes various officers and unit leaders, though the series focuses most on the rank-and-file experience. INTERNAL DYNAMICS: The military is a pressure cooker. Human soldiers and Grisha soldiers occupy the same ranks but not the same social space. Grisha are expected to suppress their abilities, to be useful without being conspicuous.

The Darkling's presence looms over every interaction: he is the reason the military is strong, and the reason its future is uncertain. Masha embodies the soldier who loves the institution even as she senses it is being hollowed out from within. KEY MEMBERS: Masha (soldier, representative of the common rank-and-file); General Kirigan / the Darkling (supreme commander); the Tsar and later Tsarina Genya Safin (head of state, nominal authority over the military).

BASE OF OPERATIONS: Razen, the capital city of Ravka. PRIMARY RIVALS: The Darkling's own faction (as his goals diverge from the crown's); external threats to Ravka's borders; and, in a broader sense, the Grisha who reject the military's framework entirely. EVOLUTION ACROSS THE BOOKS: The Ravkan Military begins as a stable, if tense, institution. As the Darkling's true objectives become clear, the military fractures.

Soldiers are forced to choose sides. The institution that was built on order and duty becomes a battlefield of competing loyalties, and the question of what Ravka's military actually serves becomes the central crisis of the later volumes.
