Lore & Background
Jan van Eck commands a vast shipping empire that dominates trade routes between the kingdoms. His influence extends into Ketterdam, where his business interests often clash with or fund various factions. To Jan, commerce and reputation are paramount; he views family obligations through the lens of profitability and social standing rather than affection. His relationship with his son Wylan is strained and distant. Jan sent Wylan away to Ketterdam Academy, ostensibly for education but largely to remove him from Kerch society due to perceived inadequacies or lack of interest in the family business. This decision inadvertently set Wylan on a path toward the Dregs and Kaz Brekker's crew, as he sought independence from his father's shadow.
Reader's Guide
Jan van Eck functions as a background antagonist in Wylan's personal narrative rather than a direct threat to the wider world. His moral alignment leans toward lawful neutral, prioritizing business contracts and social order over emotional bonds or justice. His key relationship is with Wylan, defined by neglect and high expectations. This dynamic drives much of Wylan's internal conflict, fueling his desire for autonomy while leaving him vulnerable to manipulation regarding his inheritance and safety. As a non-Grisha, Jan lacks magical abilities. His power stems entirely from capital and influence. This defines his role in the narrative as a symbol of the 'legitimate' world that often enables the illicit activities of characters like Kaz Brekker through trade routes and financial backing.
