The documentary originated from clips posted on Green Day's YouTube channel during the recording of the trilogy. Bassist Mike Dirnt stated that the clips gave fans a weekly look at the recording process, and that ¡Cuatro! brought fans closer by revealing more of what it was like to make the records. Lead guitarist and vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong told Billboard that the aim was not a conventional sit-down interview but to capture the lifestyles of rock 'n' roll and let the story tell itself. Drummer Tré Cool described the documentary's purpose as showing fans what making a record is like, comparing it to handing someone a sausage rather than describing it.

A 40-minute version of the documentary premiered on VH1 in 2012, and the full documentary debuted at the Winter X Games XVII in January 2013, later screening at SXSW in March 2013. It was originally released exclusively to purchasers of the ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, ¡Tré! box set on April 8, 2013, then bundled with ¡Tré! on August 26, 2013, before its standalone DVD and digital release on September 24, 2013.
